Improved spam protection means less junk mail for our customers
We’ve expanded and improved our existing spam protection to better stop unsolicited emails and phishing attempts making their way to our users’ inboxes.
The change, an additional anti-spam module from Sophos via our supplier Halon, means we can more accurately interpret email content and understand how it’s categorized as spam. The module analyzes incoming emails and assigns a value to them based on the likelihood that it’s malicious. The result is that fewer unwanted emails manage to bypass the filters.
– We have recently seen an increase in cyber threats in general and more sophisticated phishing attempts in particular. That means it’s even more crucial that we continuously improve our protection to stay ahead of the bad guys, says Martin Stenröse, Operations and Security Manager at Oderland.
– Thanks to our enhanced protection, we have been able to increase spam detection by almost 15%, giving our customers a more secure email experience.
The improved spam protection also includes a feature that tracks and detects spam via QR codes, specifically called “quishing”.

How Oderland’s spam protection works
A defense system requires multiple levels of protection to be effective. To a large extent, the success rate depends on the variety and ingenuity of the hackers. Today, for example, they can use anything from traditional IP address blocking to cutting-edge AI algorithms that learn to recognize patterns dynamically. Despite these multifaceted efforts, it’s difficult to stop 100% of all phishing attempts.
Our spam protection is included in all web hosting packages and is available as an option for our Managed Server. We use Halon Protect against spam and other cyber threats. In short, you can say that our spam protection system:
- Scans the sender’s domain and email address to find out whether its reputation is good or bad.
- Check where the emails are coming from. Which IP addresses are sending the emails? The system tells us whether that sender has a bad reputation and should be blocked.
- Ensures that the IP address sending the email is authorized for the domain it comes from.
- Checking that the content is legitimate or if it contains anything that could be categorized as malicious or undesirable, such as suspicious links.
– As a web host, protecting our customers’ services and data is our primary focus. We’re constantly evaluating and improving our security solutions to ensure that our customers get the highest possible protection for their infrastructure and email, says Martin.

Attackers have no shortage of imagination. One popular method is sending out emails with legitimate links at the time of sending to bypass spam filters. When they change the content of these links at a later stage, the emails have long since passed the protection. For example, the email is sent during the night, passes the filters while you’re sleeping and is changed by the time you’re browsing through the emails sipping your morning coffee.
